SOLAR ROADS

"When there's a huge solar energy spill, it's just called a 'nice day'."

Why Solar Roads?

Could concrete roads keep cities cooler? In theory, yes, but is it the one size fits all solution? Definitely not, being a fan of options, I recalled another road solution.

I am a fan of Disney’s Tron: Legacy, I even looked up to see if a running Light Cycle was possible to build. The visual effects were stunning. What got me most, was the streets, the way they were lit up was fascinating. Then I remembered a segment on History Channel’s Modern Marvels.

Solar Roads, the concept seemed so simple, it was definitely one of those, “Why didn’t I think of that?” moments. Roads are replaced with solar panels that are able to be driven on. No huge plots of land set aside for solar farms, why not place them on something that’s already being used?

Not only can they collect energy from the sun and convert it into electrical energy, but the solar panels are equipped with LED lights so you can illuminate lanes and road signs. You are able to place messages on the roads to inform drivers of potential hazards ahead. Imagine downtown lit up via the panels to celebrate the holidays, sporting events, and concerts. The solar panels can also be heated up to just above freezing temperatures to prevent ice and snow, saving taxpayers money on de-icing procedures.

Proven concepts are already available.

Normandy, France – First solar road in the world, length six-tenths of a mile

Krommenie, Netherlands – Solar bike path, length unknown.

Budapest – A company, Prologis, had a fifty square foot solar sidewalk installed. When not charging the companies electric vehicles, it helps power their office building.

Gwinnett County, Georgia – Located on the Georgia-Alabama border, five hundred and thirty-eight square feet of solar panels were installed.

Jinan, China – First solar highway, length 1.2 miles.

Carson, California – eHighway, length one mile.
